Has globalization forever undermined the state as the mighty guarantor of public welfare and security? In the 1990s, the prevailing and even hopeful view was that it had. The euphoria did not last long. Today the "return of the state" is increasingly being discussed as a desirable reality. This book is the first to bring together a group of prominent scholars from comparative politics, international relations, and sociology to systematically reassess--through a historical lens that moves beyond the standard focus on the West--state-society relations and state power at the dawn of the twenty-first century. The contributors examine the sources and forms of state power in light of a range of welfare and security needs in order to tell us what states can do today. They assess the extent to which international social forces affect states, and the capacity of states to adapt in specific issue areas. Their striking conclusion is that states have continued to be pivotal in diverse areas such as nationalism, national security, multiculturalism, taxation, and industrial relations. Offering rich insights on the changing contours of state power, The Nation-State in Question will be of interest to social scientists, students, and policymakers alike. John Hall's introduction is followed by chapters by Peter Baldwin, John Campbell, Francesco Duina, Grzegorz Ekiert, Jeffrey Herbst, Christopher Hood, Anatoly Khazanov, Brendan O'Leary, T. V. La 4e de couv. indique : ""Qu'est-ce qu'une nation ?" est la question posée au XIXe siècle par Ernest Renan que l'auteur reprend ici en se plaçant dans une perspective résolument planétaire ; une autre manière de faire de l'histoire globale. Car rien n'y fait : de la Révolution d'Octobre à la Pandémie de 2020 la nation, qu'on disait moribonde ou -pire- dépassée, est plus vivante que jamais. On ne compte plus, à la surface de la terre, les mouvements de "libération nationale", de l'Écosse à la Catalogne, de la Palestine au Kurdistan. Sans la nation comme clé d'interprétation, l'histoire du monde depuis trois siècles serait incompréhensible. Sans elle l'irréductibilité de la Norvège ou de la Suisse, du Brésil ou de l'Afrique du sud resterait opaque. Sans elle le destin des puissances d'aujourd'hui, des États-Unis à la Chine, de l'Inde au Japon, devient illisible. Il n'y a rien de plus mondial que le national. On la disait imaginée, voire imaginaire : elle est construite, assurément, mais ni plus ni moins que l'international, le monde ou l'humanité, toutes ces fictions utiles grâce auxquelles -et à cause desquelles- les individus et les sociétés vivent et meurent. Quant à son imaginaire, il touche à l'essentiel, puisqu'il est celui d'une rencontre entre l'identité et la souveraineté : un peuple y devient le Peuple."

Al meer dan een halve eeuw reist Amin Maalouf de wereld rond en geeft hij zijn ogen de kost. Hij groeide op in de wereldse en welvarende steden Beiroet en Caïro, en zag hoe die steeds meer in de greep kwamen van religieuze radicalisering, nationalisme en geweld. Hij was in Saigon aan het einde van de Vietnamoorlog, en in Teheran toen de Islamitische Republiek werd uitgeroepen. Vandaag staan we, vreest hij, op de drempel van een wereldwijde schipbreuk, die alle domeinen van de beschaving treft. Amerika verliest elke morele geloofwaardigheid. Europa riskeert uiteen te vallen. De Arabische wereld zinkt weg in een diepe crisis met rampzalige gevolgen voor haar bevolking en voor de hele planeet. Om nog maar te zwijgen van de ernstige bedreigingen op het vlak van klimaat, milieu en gezondheid waar de aarde mee wordt geconfronteerd en die alleen kunnen worden aangepakt door middel van wereldwijde solidariteit. En laat het daar nu net aan ontbreken. Het is hoog tijd, vindt Maalouf, dat de mensheid zich de juiste vragen stelt, en er een antwoord op probeert te formuleren. In Schipbreuk der beschavingen treedt Maalouf op als geëngageerd toeschouwer en denker, als iemand die zijn eigen, persoonlijke ervaringen koppelt aan reflecties over een steeds veranderende wereld.
